RADON SAMPLING & LAB TESTING
You
cant see it. You cant smell it. You cant taste
it. But radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, tasteless
gas that and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.
after smoking, and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
Radon is regularly found at low concentrations in
outdoor air, but can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings.
Radon comes from the radioactive breakdown of naturally occurring
radium found in most Florida soils. As a gas in the soil, it enters
buildings through small openings in the foundation. Since the building
can hold the radon similarly to smoke trapped under a glass, indoor
radon concentrations can increase to many times that of outdoor
levels. The U.S. EPA estimates that radon is responsible tens of
thousands of lung cancer deaths per year. The only way to know the
levels in your home is to test.
Most folks have come to believe that there is no radon
in Jacksonville or Northeast Florida, the common reason is that
we have sandy soil. But, the EPA and state
health department claim otherwise; they recommend testing for
radon no matter your geographic location. Data collected by the
Florida Department of Health indicates that as many as 1 in 5 Florida
residences have elevated radon levels - in some areas of the state,
that figure goes to 1 in 2 homes! Radon mitigation construction
is recommended especially in Duval
and Nassau counties.

Description: An airtight container with activated charcoal
is deployed in the home. Radon in the air adsorbs onto the
charcoal granules. At the end of the sampling period, the
container is sealed and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
Radon is adsorbed onto the charcoal and then measured at a
certified lab with a sodium iodide detector.
